ADLEAIDE TURNBULL, contralto, born 9 December 1898 in Cape Town, died March 1958 in London
Adelaide Turnbull studied singing at the South African College of Music in Cape Town and continued at the Royal Academy, London (where she obtained the LRAM diploma) and in Italy. Her performances at the National Sunday League Concerts and in several English Opera theatres opened the doors to further successes and broadcasting programmes. With the exception of one short visit to South Africa in 1932, during which she gave a recital with the Cape Town Orchestra, she followed her career as a singer in England. Her husband, Edward Jones, was a fellow-student at the Royal Academy.
