AUBREY LODEWYK, baritone
Aubrey Lodewyk was born in Rustenburg and started singing at a very young age in church. He obtained a Vocal Art Diploma at TUT (Tshwane University of Technology) in 2005. While at this institution he was given the opportunity of participating in student productions where he sang the following roles: Dr. Malatesta in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Tesoriere in Verdi’s Un Giorno di Regno and the title role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. He also participated in production by Opera Africa and Salon Music.
In 2006 he joined the Cape Town Opera Studio and continued studying for a Post Graduate Diploma in Music Performance at UCT Opera School where he won first prize in the Shock Music Foundation singing competition. He understudied the role of Schaunard in Puccini’s La Boheme done by Cape Town Opera and sang the role of Guglielmo in Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte. In 2007 he sang the following minor roles: Silas in the South African opera The Orphans of Qumbu, Rambaldo in Puccini’s La Rondine, and De Bretigny in Massenet’s Manon. He also understudied the role of Papageno in the William Kentridge production of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute.
Oratorio performances include the Schubert Mass in C and GF Handel’s Messiah. He also sang the role of Balintulo in the world premier of the opera Poet and Prophetess for Norlands Opera in Sweden. Aubrey’s most recent performances include the role of Albert in Werther for CPO, and Jake in Porgy and Bess in the Deutsche Oper Berlin for CPO in July 2008.
Besides opera he also sings regularly in concerts, soirees, and lieder recitals. Some of them being the Cape Town Festival classical concerts in 2006 and 2007 and the Gauteng Choristers 8 Years of Musical Excellence concert.
