BRADLEY HARRIS, tenor and music teacher, born 1 November 1932 in Cardiff (Wales)
For many years Bradley Harris' mother was a professional violinist and the musical director of the Prince of Wales Theatre in Cardiff. Her son was trained in music at Cardiff University and at the Trinity College in Carmarthen. In 1956 he emigrated to South Africa and after four years as a music teacher at, respectively, the High School and Primary School in Westville, he was appointed to a similar position at the Durban High School (1960). Apart from major roles in operas, produced by the Durban Opera Group of Dr Haape, and in operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan, he appeared with the Durban Civic Orchestra and snag in radio recitals. Since 1961 he also acted as choral conductor of the Westville Civic Choral Society.
In September 1964 Harris decided to dedicate himself to singing and became the first singer to sign a contract with CAPAB. He sang major roles in their opera productions until August 1969, but in January 1970 he reverted to teaching and accepted a position as music teacher at the Kloof High School under the Natal Education Department. A year later he was appointed a lecturer in Music at the Springfield Training College.
Added by André Wium: Amongst others, Bardley Harris appeared as Hoffmann (Les Contes d'Hoffmann) and Jenik (The Bartered Bride) for NAPAC, as Kaspar (Amahl and the Night Visitors) and Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) for PACT, and after his debut with CAPAB in 1966 during the highly successful "Opera For All" tour, he was contracted to sing in Bizet's Carmen.
