GERHARD LE ROUX, tenor

The spinto tenor Gerhard le Roux was born in South Africa on 14 August 1960.  He started as soloist in the Drakensberg Boys Choir where he recorded The Messiah (Händel) as a boy soprano at the age of eleven.  After completion of his school career he studied at the opera school in Pretoria.  During this time he also became a member of the opera ensemble at the Pretoria State Theatre where he sang over forty different compramario roles in his first five years.  He made his debut as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in 1987 and was awarded the Special Nederburg Award for Opera.

During his nine years at the State Theatre Gerhard le Roux sang such roles as Alfredo (La Traviata), Il Duca di Matova (Rigoletto), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Italian Tenor (Der Rosenkavalier), Werther, Roméo (Gounod), Turiddu (Cavalleria Rusticana), Male Chorus in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia, and Rodolfo (La Boheme).

As an oratorio tenor, Gerhard le Roux sang in Beethoven‘s Ninth, Mozart‘s Requiem, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Verdi's Requiem, and Händel‘s Messiah.

Presently, Gerhard le Roux lives in Wiesbaden, Germany.  In 2002 he changed fach to spinto/jugendlich-dramatisch and made his debut as Erik in Wagner’s Fliegende Holländer.  Further debuts in Germany include Idomeneo, Don Carlo, Canio in I Pagliacci, Werther and Der Komponist Max in Krenek's Jonny Spielt Auf.  Performances include theatres such as Mannheim, Weimar, Wiesbaden, Chemnitz, Schloßfestspiele Schwerin and Stockholm.

Recently, Gerhard le Roux has made his debut in Italy (Cagliari) as Konrad in Heinrich Marschner’s opera, Hans Heilin under the baton of Maestro Palumbo from La Scala.  In 2006 and 2007 Gerhard le Roux will be singing his first Otello as well as his first Tristan.

Gerhard is married to the well-known pianist Erika le Roux.
